Robotize your life!

Anyone who has seen Adam Sandler’s, Click (an OK-ish movie about an architect who stumbles across an all-powerful, universal remote) has probably thought, “Man, I really wish I had one of those.”

Well, your wish has been fulfilled! (…Sort of.)

Tech experts, Revolv have created their own “universal” clicker, making home automation a reality for all those who are too lazy to get up off the couch to turn off the light, or the TV, or to even answer the door. Introducing: Revolv, the one-stop app that allows you to control your home like a giant Sims game. Coool!

In a nutshell, the program works as a library for the many applications out there that control in-home appliances. Revolv pools your apps together and allows you to manage them all at once.

Where this system gets really awesome is its ability to employ GPS technology, allowing you to set triggers according to your distance from home. Want the air-conditioner to switch on 20 minutes before you walk into the door? Done. Thinking of blaring a romantic ballad throughout your house as your boyfriend welcomes you home? Easy.

All you need to do is plug in Revolv’s Wi-fi Hub and you’re set! Sit back and enjoy a life of streamlined technological functionality.

How can you put a price tag on something like this? Quite easily, it seems. The program, innovative as it is, will set you back $299. That’s one expensive iPhone app… which takes us to our next point. Revolv is only available for iPhone and iPad at the moment – disappointing. An Android adaptation is in the works, though. So start saving, guys!

If you’re the lucky (rare) owner of Google Glass you’ll also be privy to controlling your home with these beauties (as you’ll see here in this nifty little video.)

While the features of Revolv do sound impressive, the question of security did pop up as a red flag for us. What happens if you lose your iPhone and someone else gets access to Revolv? Can’t they screw up your house? How could you sleep at night not knowing if your lights will be switched on and off at some sicko’s will! …Don’t even ask us to consider what it would be like if they got into the music library.

Luckily, Revolv has thought ahead and they’ve explained that the program can run on multiple platforms in the same home. You can always log on to your computer, iPad or another iPhone and deactivate your account. So don’t fret! No one will be messing with your sleep patterns/Jay Z discography if you lose your phone.

As yet, Revolv is not available in Australia (boo), but it is well on its way, so keep an eye out. Regardless, it is pretty incredible to think about what we are able to achieve with an app on our phones. We love this kind of development, because who knows what it will grow into! Will we be able to use this as a resource for social? Our entertainment schedule shared on Facebook for friends to see and comment on? Or will it all fall to pieces and leave us stuck with berserk robot houses?

We don’t know… but what we do know is that communication is now easier than ever and projects like Revolv broaden our options, which is definitely something to get excited about.

What do you think? Is this something to look forward to, or is it all a little to iRobot for your liking?
